The placenta converts fetal dehyroepiandrosterone sulfate (DHEAS) to estriol and estradiol. This stimulates oxytocin receptors in the myometrium, lowers the progesterone/estrogen ratio, and increases myometrial gap junctions, allowing for easier uterine contractions. Labor is also connected with an increase in prostaglandin synthesis in the placenta and cervix, which further activates their receptors and facilitates cervical ripening (PGE2) and uterine contractions.
