What this degree is – and what it is not

It helps to be blunt about this early, because it is the question most prospective students actually have.

This is a degree awarded by IIT Jodhpur. IIT Jodhpur designs the academic programme and issues the degree certificate, and you receive a physical degree, alumni status under institute norms, an alumni card and an IIT Jodhpur email ID on completion. IIT Jodhpur is an Institute of National Importance established under the Institutes of Technology Act, 1961.

It is not a regular on-campus IIT programme. You are not admitted through JEE, you do not live on campus, and you do not enter the on-campus placement drive. The institute does not guarantee employment through this route. Teaching is delivered online through recorded lectures and live faculty sessions, with an optional campus immersion of three to five days a year that carries its own fee and is subject to Programme Director approval.

If what you want is a B.Tech from an IIT, this is not a substitute for one and nobody should sell it to you as one. If what you want is a recognised IIT-awarded undergraduate degree in management and technology that you can study alongside a job or another degree, that is precisely what this is.

Eligibility criteria

Requirement Detail
Academic qualification Class 12 or equivalent from a recognised board, any stream
Minimum marks 60% aggregate; 50% for reserved categories
Age limit None
Entrance exam Programme’s own online qualifier test
JEE score Not required

You can apply if you have completed Class 12 in Science, Commerce or Arts; if you are a working professional returning to study; or if you are already enrolled in another degree and want to pursue this in parallel.

You cannot apply if you are currently studying in Class 12 and have not yet appeared for your board examinations. This catches a lot of people out – the programme is open to Class 12 graduates, not current Class 12 students.

Full eligibility details are on the programme page

Entrance test pattern

Admission is decided by an online qualifier test rather than by JEE rank.

Section Questions Time
Logical Reasoning 20 40 minutes
Verbal Ability 20 40 minutes
Numerical Ability 20 40 minutes
Total 60 MCQs 120 minutes

Negative marking applies. The Numerical Ability section covers arithmetic, percentages and ratios – no advanced mathematics is required, which is what makes the programme genuinely open to Commerce and Arts students rather than nominally open to them. The test fee is ₹999 and is non-refundable.

After clearing the test, shortlisted candidates attend a counselling session before confirming a seat.

IIT Jodhpur BS in Management and Technology fees

The total tuition is ₹5,60,000, charged at a flat ₹1,40,000 per academic year for all four years.

Fee Amount When
Entrance test fee ₹999 At application (non-refundable)
Seat booking amount ₹5,000 At counselling (non-refundable)
Year 1 instalment ₹1,35,000 Within 10 days of the offer
Year 2 instalment ₹1,40,000 Before Year 2 begins
Year 3 instalment ₹1,40,000 Before Year 3 begins
Year 4 instalment ₹1,40,000 Before Year 4 begins
Total tuition ₹5,60,000

Why Year 1 shows ₹1,35,000

This is the single most misread line in the fee structure, and most write-ups on this programme get it wrong.

Year 1 costs ₹1,40,000, the same as every other year. The ₹5,000 seat booking amount you pay at counselling is adjusted against that Year 1 fee – it is not an extra charge on top. Once you have paid it, the remaining Year 1 balance is ₹1,35,000, which is why the table shows that figure.

Costs outside the tuition fee

Three charges sit outside the ₹5,60,000 and are payable separately:

  • Entrance test fee: ₹999, one-time, at application
  • Campus immersion fee: approximately ₹6,000 per immersion, paid directly to IIT Jodhpur
  • Convocation fee: ₹4,000, one-time, at graduation

Budget roughly ₹10,000 to ₹30,000 across the four years for these, depending on how many immersions you attend.

Refund policy

A full refund of applicable tuition is available before classes commence, 50% within one month of commencement, and none after that. The ₹999 test fee and the ₹5,000 seat booking amount are non-refundable in all circumstances.

Confirm the current fee structure on the official page before making any payment.

Curriculum and exit options

Each semester carries six courses and about 15 hours of academic contact a week. Every course gives you two recorded classes of 50 minutes and one live faculty session of 50 minutes, which works out to 2.5 hours per course per week.

The programme follows the NEP multiple-exit structure, so you leave with a credential at whatever point you stop:

  1. After Year 1 – Certificate in Business Fundamentals
  2. After Year 2 – Diploma in Management and Technology
  3. After Year 3 – B.Sc. in Management and Technology
  4. After Year 4 – B.S. in Management and Technology Hons.

One thing to understand before you rely on this: exit is one-way. Once you take an exit award you cannot re-enter the programme. If you need to pause rather than leave, apply for a deferral instead – permitted once, for up to a year, only after you have completed Year 1, and a 50% academic fee applies for the deferred year. All requirements must be completed within six years of enrolment.

Career paths

The curriculum sits deliberately between business and technology, and the roles it points at reflect that: Business Analyst, Product Management Associate, Operations and Supply Chain Analyst, Management Consultant, and founder or early-team roles in startups. Students are also eligible to apply to the Technology Innovation and Start-up Centre at IIT Jodhpur (IITJ-TISC) for incubation support, and can take part in E-Cell activities.

No official placement or salary data has been published for this programme yet – Batch 1 has not graduated. Treat any specific package figure you see quoted for it as unverified.

Is it worth it?

It depends entirely on what you are comparing it against.

Compared to a regular on-campus IIT B.Tech, no – that is a different qualification with a different admission bar and a placement pipeline this does not have.

Compared to a private university online degree, the comparison is more interesting. Private online undergraduate degrees typically run cheaper. What you are paying the difference for here is the awarding institution: an IIT-issued degree, alumni status, and access to the IIT Jodhpur ecosystem.

Compared to not studying at all while working, this is a credible route to a recognised undergraduate degree that does not require you to leave your job, and the exit awards mean a year of study is never wholly wasted.

It suits you if you have finished Class 12, cannot or do not want to go the JEE route, and want a recognised degree you can combine with work or another course. It does not suit you if you are expecting campus placements, or if the ₹5.6 lakh would be better spent on a qualification with published outcome data.

Frequently asked questions

What are the fees for the IIT Jodhpur BS degree for 4 years? ₹5,60,000 in total, at ₹1,40,000 per academic year. The ₹5,000 seat booking amount is adjusted against Year 1, so the Year 1 balance is ₹1,35,000. The ₹999 test fee, the campus immersion fee (about ₹6,000 per immersion) and the ₹4,000 convocation fee are charged separately.

Is the BS in Management and Technology offered online or offline? Online. It is an off-campus programme taught through recorded lectures and live online faculty sessions, with an optional annual campus immersion of three to five days at IIT Jodhpur.

Which IIT gives online BS degrees? IIT Jodhpur offers this B.S. in Management and Technology, and separately a B.S./B.Sc. in Applied AI and Data Science. They are two different programmes with different curricula, different delivery partners and different fees – check the programme name carefully before applying. IIT Madras also runs online BS degrees in data science and electronic systems.

Can I get direct admission to IIT Jodhpur through this programme? No. There is no direct admission. You must clear the programme’s online entrance test and attend counselling. What you do not need is a JEE score.

Is a BS degree from IIT Jodhpur worth it? It is a genuine IIT-awarded degree with alumni status, which is the main thing you are paying for. It is not equivalent to an on-campus B.Tech and carries no placement guarantee. Judge it against other online degrees rather than against campus IIT admission.

Can I study this alongside another degree or a job? Yes. There is no age limit and the programme is explicitly open to working professionals and to students pursuing a parallel degree. Expect to commit around 15 hours a week.

Will I get an IIT Jodhpur alumni card? Yes, on successful completion you are eligible for alumni status as per institute norms, including an alumni card and an IIT Jodhpur email ID.

What happens if I drop out midway? You exit with a credential rather than nothing: a Certificate after Year 1, a Diploma after Year 2, a B.Sc. after Year 3 or a BSc. Hons after Year 4. Re-entry after taking an exit award is not permitted.
