Well, glucose is an important source of energy which is required by our body because it acts as a fuel in our body. The digested food is converted into carbohydrates, proteins, and fats. The food which affects the level of sugar in the blood is called as carbohydrates and the carbohydrates will be converted into the glucose after the digestion. The converted glucose is transferred to the blood and is availed by the cells for energy. The hormone insulin plays a major role in transferring glucose from the blood to the cells. Beta cells in the pancreas generate insulin and pancreas is the organ in the body which produces the insulin. In the people, who suffer from diabetes, the process of generating insulin is impaired. Diabetes is developed in the people when the pancreas is not capable of generating required amount of insulin in the body. There are two types of diabetes and are as below:

  • Type1 diabetes
  • Type2 diabetes

Type1 diabetes: Type1 diabetes happens mostly in the young adults and in the children and it can occur at any age. In the United States, it accounts for 5 -10% of the total diabetes patients. A genetic component does appear to the type 1 diabetes and the main cause of it has still to be identified.

Type2 diabetes: The type2 diabetes is very common and it accounts for 90 – 95% of total diabetes. This type of diabetes mainly affects adults and in these days it has begun developing in children too. There exists a strong correlation between physical inactivity, correlation, and obesity. 

The below table explains about the level of blood sugar in a normal range and also in the diabetic range:

Fasting blood sugar 80 – 99 mg/dl 126 mg/dl and above
Random blood sugar 80 – 139 mg/dl 200 mg/dl and above

Symptoms of diabetes

The below are the symptoms of diabetes and if we notice many symptoms of the below mentioned then we need to check our blood sugar. The symptoms occur very fast with type1 diabetes and we may not notice the symptoms with such rapidness in type2 diabetes. Th symptoms are:

  • Rapid weight loss and this occur more with the type1 diabetes
  • Numbness
  • Tingling in hands
  • Tingling in the feet
  • Frequent urination
  • Unexplained tiredness
  • Unusual thirst
  • Blurred vision
  • Slow healing of the cuts
  • Erectile dysfunction

How is diabetes diagnosed?

The diagnosis of the diabetes is done through a simple blood test which measures the glucose level in the blood. Normally, these tests are repeated on a succeeding day for the confirmation of the diagnosis.

The thing we need to do if we are diagnosed with diabetes:

  • We need to request a referral to a dietitian or to an educator of diabetes who is certified
  • Have to obtain a prescription for the testing supplies and glucometer
  • We need to make changes in the life style

The changes we need to make in the life style are mentioned below:

  • We should start an exercise program
  • We have to choose healthy food
  • We have to enhance the intake of fiber
  • We have to reduce the size of portion
  • We have to make a limit to the intake of sweets in our diet
  • We need to test our blood sugar at changing times

As per now, there is no treatment of cure for the both type of diabetes but there are distinct ways to keep or have diabetes under control. The treatments of diabetes are designed to aid the body in controlling the levels of sugar in the blood. Many studies have proved that a perfect control on the sugar level in the blood will avoid the complications that occur in diabetes.
