Download History of Computers PPT and PDF: The definition of a computer is as follows:  “Computer is a programmable machine which skillfully operates the data depending on the instructions.”

So, in brief, it is any device which helps the human kind in solving different types of computations. We are giving here History of Computers PPT and PDF.

Now let us know the history of computers, how they are evolved and their types are as follows:

Earliest Computers:

From the beginning, calculations were performed by the human beings with the job title as computers. For the first time, the word computer was used in 1613 and this continued till the middle of 20th century.

Tally Sticks

Tally stick was an old memory helping the device to write down numbers, messages etc.

An abacus is the mechanical machine used to help a particular person in computing mathematical computations and it was invented in Babylonia in 2400 B.C.

Napier Bones

John Napier invented Napier’s bones in 1614 which was used for multiplying, dividing and calculating square roots and cube roots. These operations were performed by moving the rods in unique boards which are constructed for them.

Side rule

In 1622, William Oughtred invented side rule based on the ideas of Napier about logarithm. Side rule was specially designed for performing only multiplications, divisions, roots, trigonometry and logarithms.

Blaise Pascal invented pascaline in 1642; it was the expensive machine which has the limitations in performing additions and subtractions.

Stepped Reckoner

In 1672, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz invented Stepped Reckoner which was automatically performing the operations like addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.

Jacquard Loom

Joseph- Marie Jacquard invented a mechanical loom called Jacquard loom in the year 1881.It was controlled by punch cards and was an automatic loom.

In 1820, Thomas de Colmar invented a mechanical calculator called arithmometers. It was a successful and useful machine which could perform the basic mathematical calculations.

Difference Engine and Analytical Engine:

Charles Babbage invented difference engine and analytical engine in the year 1822 and 1834 respectively. It was the foremost mechanical computer used to tabulate the polynomial functions.

First computer programmer

Augusta Ada Byron wrote the programs for analytical engine and suggested Charles Babbage aid the binary system in 1840.

Scheutzian calculation engine

Per George Scheutz invented the first printing calculator having a base on difference engine in 1843.

Tabulating machine

The Tabulating machine was invented in the year 1890 by Herman Hollerith, it was used to accomplish in expressing the data and accounts in a concise form.

Harvard Mark1

Harvard Mark1 was the first electro –mechanical device which was invented by Harvard H. Aiken in the year 1943 and also known as IBM ASCC (Automatic Sequence Control Calculator).

Konrad Sure made the foremost programmable computer calledZ1 from the year 1936 to 1938. In this computer the user need to insert a punch tape into a punch reader to program and the output was also generated through punch tape.

Atanasoff- Berry Computer

Atanasoff- Berry the computer was the first electronic digital calculating device, was invented by professor Atanasoff and a graduate student named Clifford Berry at the University Of Lowa State in the year 1939 to 1942.

Electronic Numerical Integrator and Computer is the abbreviation of ENIAC, it was the first computer used for general purpose and made in 1946 by John Presper Eckert and John W. Mauchly.

Universal Automatic Computer1 is the abbreviation of UNIVAC1 and was the earliest commercial computer made by John Presper Eckert and John W. Mauchly.

EDVAC (Electronic Discrete Variable Automatic Computer), it was the earliest saved list of instructions computer made by Von Neumann in the year 1952. EDVAC had the memory for storing the list of instructions and also information.

The Foremost Portable Computer:

Osborne Computer Corporation made the first portable computer called Osborne1 in 1981.

Personal Computers

These are the fast electronic calculating machine that accepts the digitalized input to the internal program and process the desired output.

Desktop Computers

They have processing and storage units, visual display and output units.

Portable or Notebook Computers

They are the compact vision of personal computers with all the components packed into a single unit in the size of a briefcase.

These are the high-resolution graphics and have more computational power than personal computers.

Servers are a range of very large and powerful computer system.

Super Computers

Super Computers are the high end of computers and are used for the large-scale numerical calculations for the required applications like weather forecasting, aircraft design and much more. The development of the supercomputers will be the future of the computers.

Hence, this about the detailed history of computers and from these we can easily understand that vast development of the technology starting from the working of humankind to the working of machines and Electronics Control Company was the earliest computer company and was established by John Presper Eckert, John W. Mauchly in the year 1949.
