Types of Network Topology

Network Topology is basically divided into five basic types mentioned below:

  1. Star Topology

A topology in which all the components in the network connects with the central device is known as the star topology. The central device can be a switch, a router or a hub. All the workstations are connected with a point to point connection to the central device. Prior to reaching the intended location, all the data passes through the central device on the star topology.

It is also known by the name of the star network among the people.

  1. Bus Topology

In a bus topology, all the nodes and devices are connected to the same transmission line in a sequential way. It is a simple and low-cost topology, but there can be a risk if its single point gets failed. The major advantage of using a bus topology is that it needs a shorter cable as compared to other topologies.

  1. Ring Topology

Ring Topology can be defined as that topology in which all the devices connect indirectly through interface device or directly to the ring. The different nodes are connected in the form of a circle and a ring in this type of network topology.

  1. Mesh Topology

In a mesh topology, every node is directly connected to all the nodes that present in the network. It results in the network to become less prone to faults. However, its high cost limits it to only to highly critical networks. The messages can be relayed in the mesh networks by using either a routing technique or a flooding technique.

  1. Tree Topology

A tree network topology can be defined as a combination of two or more star networks connected to each other. It can be called as an extension to the star and bus topologies. It is the best option where the star and bus networks can’t get implemented because of the scalability issues.

Tips While Selecting a Topology

  • Always think about your budget. The least expensive method to install a network is a linear bus network because you don’t need to buy concentrators.
  • Keep cable’s length into consideration. There is a need for shorter length cables for a linear bus network.
  • While selecting the type of cable, think twice. The unshielded twisted pair is one of the most common types in schools and it is often used along with the star networks.
